How to Prevent Oral Injuries

Posted .

You deserve to have a strong and healthy smile, which is why our dentists, Dr. Sheila Poetti and Dr. Avinash Bidra strongly recommend cleaning and caring for your teeth and gums regularly. Another thing you can do to increase your chances of having the top-notch smile you want is do everything you can to prevent oral injuries. To help you do so, our dentist is happy to share the following tips:

-Wear a mouthguard: If you participate in high-contact sports and activities, then it’s important to wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can cover your arch of teeth and protect it when you get hit in the face with an elbow, knee or other hard object. In fact, it can help you avoid knocked-out and broken teeth.

-Use fluoride: Fluoride is a mineral that can be found in many natural resources. When you expose your teeth to fluoride, the mineral strengthens the tooth enamel, making it a tough shell. The tougher the shell, the reduced chance you have of suffering an injury. So, expose your teeth to fluoride regularly!

-Avoid chewing on hard things: When you chew on things like pens, pencils, ice and your fingernails, you apply unnatural pressure to the teeth. This can then cause tooth fractures and tooth cracks. It’s best to avoid chewing on hard things altogether.
